Origin of the Song

Famous as ‘Lord Shiv ki aarti’, Om Jai Shiv Omkara is a bhajan written in the early nineteenth century by Swami Shivananda, who resided somewhere in Varanasi. This hymn became popular in Varanasi temples and Swami Vivekananda happened to hear during his visit to Varanasi. Getting inspired by the lyrics, Swami Vivekananda brought this hymn to the Belur Math in Bengal. The Belur Math on those days was the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission.

The uniqueness of this bhajan is that it regards Lord Shiva as Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva of the Holy Triumvirate. The Lord is one and all creator, preserver, destroyer and sustainer of all living beings in the universe. God Shiva is considered to be the one and all who adorn all the glory of the world and can help relieve you from sufferings, miseries, uncertainties and failures. Singing or listening to this song every day will make your mind calm, bring peace and restore balance in life.
